RadioOnFire.com - Kanye West let the cat out of the bag on the status of negotiations between TIDAL and Apple on Saturday [July 30], giving reference to a "beef" between the streaming service and tech giant, and calling shots in an attempt to pressure a deal.
"I need Tim Cook Jay Z Dez Jimmy Larry me and Drake Scooter on the phone or in a room this week!!!" Ye wrote after sending out a tweet in which he claims that their failure to make progress on talks that began in June, is "f***ing up the music game."
While there has been no official word from either camp, last month the Wall Street Journal did break word from sources that preliminary talks were taking place. Both companies have found themselves on the losing end of the competition with Spotify, which is estimated to have 30 million subscribers, double that of Beats Music, which Apple acquired from Dr. Dre for $3 billion in 2014. It has become increasingly clear that Jay-Z, who landed Tidal for $56 million the following year, took a page out of the doctor's book by buying the service with the aim of selling it.
There is little telling just how interested Apple CEO Tim Cook is in taking on the venture. Apple has been known to be a fierce competitor; thus there is no doubt he'd love to get a one-up on Spotify. TIDAL does have industry appeal, with an artist-friendly model that has built a repertoire with some of the biggest names in the industry, but it has struggled to retain subscriptions, having had a comparatively minuscule 3 million by March. Kanye may not have helped the cause as he followed up his plea by getting personal when he wrote, "Apple give Jay his check for Tidal now and stop trying to act like you Steve."
