RadioOnFire.com - Only days before his 18th birthday, fashion rebel Jaden Smith hit the presses a day closer to adulthood and one step closer to redefining masculinity, as it was announced that he'd be fashion magazine Nylon's first male cover star. The main feature will mark the latest of an assortment of symbolic accomplishments for the model/designer/clothing label head, known for his gender bending stylings. The news comes only a day after Calvin Klein unveiled Young Thug and Frank Ocean as flagships for an ad campaign in which Young Thug dismisses the notion that gender really exists.
Smith spoke on the Nylon's move from a position of social responsibility, one which contradicts the premise of critics who argue against his ideals as dangerous. According to the MSFTS leader, he is if anything protecting and saving lives. "So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him," he told the publication. "It just doesn’t matter. I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generations of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.”
Last year Smith staked his claim at the forefront of a fashion movement that has been preceded by such artists as Kanye West and Prince. "It's about creating! It's all about creating, and dressing a generation and helping a generation and...educating a generation!," he was recorded saying in a clip that traveled social media. In January, Smith generated a swarm of headlines when he was featured in a skirt by Louis Vuitton. "It was lit because we all knew that we were going to impact the culture and change the game and make a difference," he said of the experience.
Nylon's August issue is scheduled to hit the stands on August 19.
