Gunman Opens Fire At Oregon Community College, Killing 13; Gunman Dead

President Barack Obama says the U.S. is becoming numb to mass shootings and says their perpetrators have "sickness" in their minds.

He says thoughts and prayers are no longer enough in these situations because they don't do anything to stop similar acts from happening in the next week or a few months later.

Obama spoke Thursday after 13 people were killed by a 20-year-old gunman at Umpqua Community College in southwestern Oregon.
Obama said the situation won't change unless Congress enacts comprehensive gun control legislation.
The shooting happened at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. The local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the school.

Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said 13 people are dead. State police Lt. Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that at least 20 others were hurt.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the 20-year-old gunman was killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers. The sheriff did not say whether the shooter was killed by officers or took his own life.

"We locked our door, and I went out to lock up the restrooms and could hear four shots from the front of campus," UCC Foundation Executive Director Dennis O'Neill told the Roseburg News-Review.

A photographer for the newspaper said he saw people being loaded into multiple ambulances and taken to the local hospital.

The school has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the college was not immediately returned.

Neither state police nor the sheriff's office immediately returned calls from The Associated Press seeking details.

Hurricane Joaquin Could Add To Rainy Mess Along East Coast

Governors up and down the East Coast are warning residents to prepare for drenching storms that could cause power outages and close roads in a region already walloped by rain.
Hurricane Joaquin's approach could intensify the damage, but rain is forecast across the region regardless of the storm's path.
"Our state has seen the damage that extreme weather can cause time and time again - and I am urging New Yorkers to take precautions for more heavy storms in the coming days," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news release Wednesday.
No matter which way Joaquin heads, an area of low pressure in the Southeast and a front stalled over the East Coast will pull moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, causing rain over the next few days, said Bruce Terry, lead forecaster for the government's Weather Prediction Center. The National Weather Service predicts as much as 10 inches for some areas.
"The bottom line is: We are expecting very heavy rains all the way from the Carolinas up into New England," he said.
The heaviest rain is expected in wide swaths of North Carolina and Virginia, along with parts of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, according to a National Weather Service forecast map.
In North Carolina, Gov. Pat McCrory said emergency management officials are preparing for expected floods by readying supplies and going over readiness checklists.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon, which allows emergency responders to begin to prepare for the storms.
He also issued tips to residents, including that "when roads are flooded, turn around and drive to a safe location."
"It may save your life."
Officials were closely watching the progress of the hurricane, though its path was far from certain. So far, there's been little consensus among computer-prediction models for the hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami sent a plane aloft Wednesday to gather data about Joaquin that will hopefully "get those models into better agreement," said Rick Knabb, the center's director.
"We're going to be throwing a lot more aircraft resources at this problem over the next few days," he said.
Storms in recent days have already caused misery in southwest Virginia. In Salem on Tuesday, 30 members of a water-rescue team removed 100 people from a low-lying apartment complex and trailer park.
To the west in Elliston, Shannon Sledd waited out the storm in the house she shares with her disabled parents and her two sons. Floodwaters up to 5 feet deep rose up to her front door, but didn't get inside.
"My mom and dad are really nervous," Sledd said. "We might have to get out."
In North Carolina, steady rains have already disrupted communities from the central part of the state to the coast.

On Final Day Of U.S. Trip Pope Meets With Sex-Abuse Victims, Promises Accountability

Pope Francis met with victims of child-molesting priests Sunday on the final day of his U.S. visit and promised to hold accountable those responsible for the scandal, delivering a powerful warning to American bishops accused of covering up for pedophiles instead of reporting them to police.

The pontiff disclosed the gesture of reconciliation at the start of a meeting with U.S. bishops gathered in Philadelphia for a big rally on Catholic families.

Francis praised the victims as "true heralds of mercy" who deserve the church's gratitude and said sex abuse in the church can no longer be kept a secret. He promised to "zealously" protect young people and see that "all those responsible are held accountable."

Francis has agreed to create a new Vatican tribunal to prosecute bishops who failed to protect their flock by covering up for pedophile priests.

Victims' advisory groups had complained earlier in the week that Francis had neglected to address their plight when he congratulated bishops for their "courageous" and generous response to the scandal.

On Sunday, he directed his attention to the victims in a city hit hard by the scandal. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has been the subject of repeated grand jury investigations, and a monsignor was convicted of endangering children by not removing pedophile priests.

Later Sunday, Francis was scheduled to visit a prison and celebrate a final Mass on U.S. soil on Philadelphia's grandest boulevard, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Organizers said they expected 1 million people to turn out. But there were fears that the extraordinary security - including airport-style bag searches, crowd-control cattle chutes and blocked-off streets - would scare away many.

Roman Catholics from across the country and around the world began making the trek to the Mass hours ahead, crossing bridges on foot and packing subway cars.

At Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, Francis planned to visit with 100 inmates, including suspected killers, rapists and mobsters. He was expected to offer them words of hope, forgiveness and redemption.

"His mission is the marginalized, the forgotten," prison spokeswoman Shawn Hawes said. "From our understanding, he wants those who are in custody to know that they are not forgotten and they can be redeemed."

Prison ministry has been a hallmark of Francis' pontificate. He meets often with inmates and has washed prisoners' feet during pre-Easter rituals. He opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and has called for the abolition of life imprisonment and solitary confinement.

On Saturday night, Francis was cheered by tens of thousands at a music-and-prayer festival on the Parkway, waving to the crowd in his open-air popemobile. Performers included Aretha Franklin and Andrea Bocelli.

He called families a "factory of hope," even with their imperfections.

House Speaker John Boehner Announces Resignation

With Congress in turmoil, House Speaker John Boehner abruptly informed fellow Republicans on Friday that he would resign from Congress at the end of October, stepping aside in the face of hardline conservative opposition that threatens an institutional crisis.

The 13-term Ohio Republican, second in line to the presidency, shocked his GOP caucus Friday morning when he announced his decision in a closed-door session. It came one day after a high point of Boehner's congressional career, a historic speech by Pope Francis to Congress at Boehner's request.

A constant focus of conservatives' complaints, Boehner was facing the threat of a floor vote on whether he could stay on as speaker, a formal challenge that hasn't happened in over 100 years. That was being pushed by tea partyers convinced Boehner wasn't fighting hard enough to strip Planned Parenthood of government funds, even though doing so risked a government shutdown next week.

"It's become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable harm to the institution," Boehner told a news conference several hours after making the announcement to his rank and file. "There was never any doubt I could survive the vote, but I didn't want my members to go through this, I didn't want this institution to go through this."

Boehner said he had planned all along to announce in November that he was resigning at the end of this year, but had not said so publicly. After emotional moments Thursday at the pope's side, he woke up Friday morning and decided now was the time.

Dr. Ben Carson Claims His Campaign Makes $1Mill Per Day After Harsh Remarks About Muslims

Presidential candidate and former neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson found himself under a great deal of heat after he made comments about not advocating for a muslim president. Despite all of the negative attention he has received from his comments, it seems to be working out pretty well for his presidential campaign which he claims has been ranking in about $1mill dollars per day or more since he made the comment.
