Drug Lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested Friday during a violent showdown that ended in five people being killed and a Mexican marine being injured.
The arrest was announced in a tweet from Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto around 11:20 a.m.
In a subsequent tweet, Nieto thanked the SecurityCabinet of the Government of the Republic “for this important achievement for the rule of law in Mexico .”
Five people died and a Mexican marine was injured during the arrest, which occurred after the marines got a tip about a home in the town of Los Mochis, the AP reports. Responding officials were fired on from inside the home. After the clash, five suspects were killed and six others arrested, according to AP.
The Drug Enforcement Administration said the organization was pleased with the capture of “El Chapo.”
“We congratulate the MX Government and salute the bravery involved in his capture,” the DEA tweeted.
Nicknamed “Shorty” for his height, Guzman has escaped twice from Mexican custody. The first was from a maximum-security prison in 2001 when he reportedly hid in a laundry cart. The second was in July 2015 when he broke out of a Mexican maximum-security prison through an underground tunnel.
That breakout spurred major criticism about the Mexican government’s ability to safeguard such a notorious criminal, with some saying he should have been held in the United States.
